DF5-0007 (1977)
Dong Feng 'East Wind' diesel-electric locomotive has been in production since 1976 and is still produced in various versions.
It is the most common “hood” locomotive in China and is used for both passenger and freight services. Some were exported to DPRK and are still in use.
Only two units were completed before the 27 July 1976 Tangshan earthquake which killed 1700 workers and severely damaged/destroyed the factory. Within two months the new factory was producing low quality engines, but production was then moved to better facilities. Production carried on for thirty years.
The Tangshan earthquake is the largest killer of all 20th century earthquakes, and caused the immediate deaths of more than a quarter million people.
